MIDI
Musical Instrument Digital Interface. A standard developed to help musical devices communicate with each other. It is sort of the musical equivalent of a computer modem. It specifies what note should be played and released when and with what velocity, as well as other information. It does not contain the sounds of the notes; that is determined by the MIDI playback instrument.
